Job Summary
Under direct supervision, performs work that is straightforward, routinely structured and guided by established policies and procedures. Assignments involve inspections and preparation of inspection reports, indicating compliance or non-compliance with the approved plans and applicable codes.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
Observes or performs inspections, investigations and compliance work related to building construction sites and projects.
Enforces construction codes, including the D.C. Municipal Regulation Title 12, the International Code Council (ICC) Codes, and referenced standards. Issues notices of correction and notices of violation.
Assists with the investigation, research, and resolution of citizen complaints regarding buildings, building construction, and code compliance.
Prepares written and electronic inspection reports listing required corrections based on inspection of construction work or approval of construction work.
Observes or participates in discussions with architects, engineers, contractors, subcontractors, representatives from Fire Marshall’s Office, specialty inspectors, permit staff, and the public regarding permits, specifications, materials, methods and plans.
Core Competencies
Basic knowledge of one or more building trades, electrical work, carpentry work, cement work or plumbing.
Basic knowledge of International Code Council Codes and other applicable codes and regulations.
Knowledge of, and ability to use computer software, e.g., (utilizing Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint)
Ability to read and interpret plans and specifications. Ability to perform basic mathematical problems and/or structural calculations.
Licenses, Certifications, and Other Requirements
Valid driver’s license.

Assignments involve independent. examination of construction, alterations, and repairs to ensure compliance with applicable codes, regulations, and approved building plans and specifications.

Investigates, researches, and resolves citizen complaints regarding buildings, building construction and code compliance.
Explains and interprets codes, quality control regulations and requirements.

Conducts discussions with architects, engineers, contractors, subcontractors, representatives from Fire Marshall’s Office, specialty inspectors, permit staff and the public, regarding permits, specifications, materials, methods and plans.
Researches new products and materials for code compliance and apprises other inspectors of relevant findings.
Provides guidance and assistance to the more junior Inspectors.

Job Summary
Under limited guidance, performs the more complex and critical inspections of building construction sites and project. Examines construction, alterations, and repairs to ensure compliance with applicable codes, regulations, approved building plans, and specifications. Creates and issues inspection reports. Also, provides advice, guidance, and technical assistance to agency officials.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
Conducts inspection, investigation and compliance work related to building construction sites and projects to ensure that each aspect of construction, alteration, or repair is in compliance with applicable codes, regulations and approved building plans and specifications.
Conducts on-site inspections of footings, foundations, framings, electrical hookups, plumbing and mechanical systems.
Investigates, researches and resolves citizen complaints regarding buildings, building construction and code compliance. Explains and interprets codes, quality control regulations and requirements.
Document inspection findings in writing and electronically listing required corrections based on inspection of construction work or approval of construction work. Issues violation and stop-work orders if building is not in compliant.
May provide testimony during court hearings and other tribunals regarding inspections and investigations personally conducted or witnessed.
Leads discussions with architects, engineers, contractors, subcontractors, representatives from Fire Marshall’s Office, specialty inspectors, permit staff and the public regarding permits, specifications, materials, methods and plans.
