Correctional Officer

Correctional Officer - CS-0007-06

Job Summary 

Under direct supervision, works at the entry level within the job progression for Correctional Officers with emphasis on providing protection, and monitoring of inmates and detainees that are in penal or rehabilitative institutions in accordance with established regulations and procedures. 

Major Duties and Responsibilities 

Conducts inmate counts in the housing units and performs daily surveillance in living quarters, dining area, and other assigned areas.  

Conducts security checks of staff and visitors including shakedowns and common areas for weapons and/or contraband.  

Controls inmate movement throughout the facility including taking action to prevent escapes.

Serves as driver or accompany other Corrections Officers. Monitors prisoners in transit between jail, courtroom, prison, or other destinations.

Core Competencies  

Practical knowledge of rules, policies, regulations, pertinent orders, and specific guidelines and procedures of the institution.

Knowledge of and ability to perform surveillance of inmates and/or detainees.

Knowledge of and ability to apply correctional skills and techniques.

Licenses, Certifications, and Other Requirements  

Valid Driver’s License

Job Summary 

Under general supervision, works at the intermediate level within the job progression for Correctional Officers with emphasis on providing protection, and monitoring of inmates and detainees that are in penal or rehabilitative institutions in accordance with established regulations and procedures. 

Major Duties and Responsibilities 

Ensures inmates and/or inmates are in compliance in living and work areas. Reports unusual occurrences to the senior staff in accordance with policy.   

Accounts for inmates and/or detainees assigned to work or in housing units. Performs surveillance of inmate and/or detainee work squads.

Controls inmate movement throughout the facility including taking action to prevent escapes. Transports inmates and/or detainees to outside facilities such as court or medical appointments.  

Maintains inventory of security devices such as handcuffs, leg irons, black security boxes, radio, alarms, locks, and reports deficiencies

Core Competencies  

Knowledge of rules, policies, regulations, pertinent orders, and specific guidelines and procedures of the institution.

Knowledge of the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area and surrounding jurisdictions.

Knowledge of and ability to perform surveillance of inmates and/or detainees work squads.

Job Summary 

Under limited supervision, works at the full performance level within the job progression for Correctional Officers with emphasis on providing protection, and monitoring of inmates and detainees that are in penal or rehabilitative institutions in accordance with established regulations and procedures.

Major Duties and Responsibilities 

Conducts investigations and submit reports on illegal or questionable occurrences.  

Prevents the theft or illegal use of such items as drugs, tools, personal property, or instruments which could be used as weapons or as a means of escape.

Identifies and closely works with inmates and/or detainees that possess behavioral and emotional problems.

Oversees inmates in living quarters, dining areas, and visiting hall during inmate free-time periods when a large number of inmates are located together.

Core Competencies  

Thorough knowledge of rules, policies, regulations, pertinent orders, and specific guidelines and procedures of the institution.

Ability to provide the inmates and/or detainees with advice on moderately complex matters.

Skill in communicating, and ability to deal effectively with all types of people from all walks of life.

Lead Correctional Officer - CS-0007-09

Job Summary 

Under broad guidance, serves as a lead advisor to staff, providing advice on complex, sensitive or unusual situations; and provides mentoring to lower-level officers. Counsels inmates and/or detainees on institutional and behavior problems, adjustments to incarceration, and resolves institutional violations and altercations.

Major Duties and Responsibilities 

Coordinates activities of other Corrections Officers and handles escalated issues. Advises other Corrections Officers on complex, sensitive, or unusual situations.

Counsels inmates and/or detainees on complex institutional and behavior issues, resolves violations and altercations, and conducts area shakedowns especially on illegal and questionable occurrences.

Investigates complaints by inmates and/or detainees and employees for validity and institutional parameters.

Oversees and conducts security checks of staff, visitors, and inmates/detainees, including shakedowns in living quarters, recreation, visiting, and common areas for weapons and contraband.

Performs administrative and related duties which includes preparing reports on special/complex assignments, memos, log entries, and progress reports; records unusual incidents. 

Core Competencies  

Comprehensive knowledge of rules, policies, regulations, pertinent orders, and specific guidelines and procedures of the institutions.

Comprehensive knowledge of counseling techniques, identifying personal and emotional problems, and the ability to recommend professional treatment where needed.

Ability to deal with emergency situations using skill in the application of guidelines and sound correctional practices.
