Job Summary 

The primary purpose of this position is to provide prompt initial care to significantly increase patient survivability and reduce the possibility of long-term serious injury.

Major Duties and Responsibilities 

Responds to accidents and other emergencies involving injury and illness which sometimes may be life-threatening.

Performs basic emergency medical treatment.

Provides transportation of patients to medical treatment facilities as deemed necessary by physicians.

Operates emergency or patient transport vehicles and other equipment.

Assists in lifting and carrying patients out of the ambulance and into the emergency treatment facility.

Core Competencies  

Knowledge of basic and commonly used medical terminology, medical equipment, supplies, procedures and major body systems to perform emergency medical care.

Ability to drive an ambulance and operate emergency equipment.

Ability to respond quickly and appropriately under stressful and emergency conditions.

Ability to engage in strenuous physical effort for prolonged periods.

Ability to prioritize treatments for patients having multiple problems.

Licenses, Certifications, and Other Requirements  

Must be certified as EMT by DC Health.

Must possess current and valid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Basic Life Support certifications.

Must possess a current valid driver license.

Basic Qualifications   

Degree Required: None.

Work Experience: Specialized work experience directly related to the position.
