Job Summary 

Under close supervision, works at the entry level within the job progression for Forensic Scientists with emphasis on providing practice in performing forensic scientific analysis, under close supervisory guidance and control for training.

Major Duties and Responsibilities 

Assists with scientific laboratory analyses of physical evidence for forensic investigations.  

Assists with the collection, preservation, and maintenance of evidence in the forensic laboratory.

Assisting with the quality checks on laboratory procedures, equipment, and reagents.   

Assists and participates in externally administered proficiency tests, and the interpretation and analysis of test results.  

May perform minor repairs and preventive maintenance on laboratory equipment and analytical instruments.

Core Competencies  

Basic knowledge of the scientific principles, methods, and processes; and guidelines, regulations, and procedures associated with criminal investigation.  

Ability to gather, analyze and evaluate information/data.

Skill and ability to use a personal computer.

Degree Required: Biological sciences, chemistry or related disciplines appropriate to the position.

Job Summary 

Under direct supervision, works at the intermediate level in the Forensic Scientist job progression with emphasis on providing scientific laboratory analysis on physical evidence for forensic investigations; and interpreting results from the analysis, draws conclusions, prepares reports, and documents findings.

Major Duties and Responsibilities 

Performs scientific laboratory analyses of physical evidence.

Collects, preserves and maintains evidence in the forensic laboratory.

Participates in and completes externally administered proficiency tests.

Completes detailed notes to properly document analytical results.  

Interprets and analyzes test results; and maintains appropriate case file documentation.  

Gathers evidence for presentation in court; and may testifies in court, regarding examination results.  

Prepares comprehensive scientific reports, declarations and affidavits.   

Uploads data from forensic analyses into appropriate databases.

Core Competencies  

Knowledge of the scientific principles, methods and processes; and the ability to apply forensic laboratory methods and procedures.

Knowledge of criminal investigation guidelines, regulations and procedures.; and procedures of civil, criminal, and evidence collection.  

Ability to analyze, evaluate investigate information and data.

Job Summary 

Under general supervision, performs the full performance level in the Forensic Scientist job progression with emphasis on work involving moderately complex forensic scientific laboratory analyses for forensic investigations. Typical assignments include reviewing physical evidence; interpreting examination results; drawing conclusions; and preparing reports of findings.

Major Duties and Responsibilities 

Performs moderately complex scientific laboratory analysis of physical evidence, collecting, preserving, and maintaining evidence.  

Completes externally administered proficiency tests; and interprets and analyzes test results.

Researches technical journals, textbook and forensic science manuals for the best methods of analyzing tests.  

Participates in the development of standard operating procedures (SOP) for the laboratory; and updates existing procedures.    

Corresponds with attorneys and law enforcement personnel to discuss case information; and testifies in criminal court proceedings.

Operates, calibrates, troubleshoots and performs minor repairs and preventive maintenance on laboratory equipment and analytical instruments.

Thorough knowledge of the scientific principles, methods and processes; and the ability to apply forensic laboratory methods and procedures.

Job Summary 

With broad guidance, performs at the senior-level in the Forensic Scientist job progression with emphasis on work involving technical reviews of complex forensic scientific laboratory analysis for forensic investigations; and provides technical guidance and training to lower level Forensic Scientists. 

Major Duties and Responsibilities 

Performs complex scientific laboratory analysis of physical evidence, and forensic investigations.

Reviews physical evidence, interprets examination results, draws conclusions and prepares reports documenting findings.

Prepares comprehensive scientific reports, declarations and affidavits, ensuring the accuracy of information received.  

Conducts research of new procedures and methods; and makes recommendations. Develops standard operating procedures.

Corresponds with attorneys and law enforcement personnel, discussing complex case information and evidence for court.  

Testifies as an expert in court consistent with scientific principles and examination results.     

Completes externally administered proficiency tests; and schedules analytical testing for incoming cases.  

Operates, calibrates, troubleshoots, and performs minor repairs and preventive maintenance on laboratory equipment and analytical instruments.

Trains and provides technical guidance to lower graded Forensic Scientists.
