Job Summary 

Under the general supervision, maintains control over vehicular traffic for the protection of children and other pedestrians being directed or escorted safely across streets.

Major Duties and Responsibilities 

Controls traffic flow to assist and protect children and pedestrians safely crossing the streets and intersections to which they are assigned.
Rotates to various intersections within assigned Wards located in the District of Columbia.
Reports to the proper police authority or other designated official any violations of traffic laws.
Informs motorists through appropriate hand signals, that school children are about to use the crossing intersection and have the right of way.

Core Competencies  

Knowledge to traffic signals and governing traffic laws and general safety precautions for school crossing.
Knowledge of applicable safety rules, practices, and procedures and the ability to recognize adverse signs, and react swiftly in emergency situations.
Ability to communicate and interact effectively with others.

Lead Safety Technician - CS-019-04

Job Summary 

Under general supervision, assists the supervisor in overseeing the distribution and completion of work assignments and provision of necessary training for assigned Safety Technician staff involved in maintaining control over vehicular traffic for protection of children and pedestrians.

Major Duties and Responsibilities 

Assists the supervisor to ensure that the work assignment of assigned employees are effectively carried out. Informs assigned staff of all available services and employee activities.
Instructs Safety Technicians in specific tasks and job techniques and makes available necessary written instructions, reference materials and supplies.
Resolves simple informal complaints of assigned staff and refer others to supervisor. Reports to the supervisor on performance, progress, and training needs of Safety Technicians.
Assists children in safely crossing the streets at assigned intersections. Controls flow of traffic for the protection of pedestrians. Controls traffic from curb or by entering street intersections.

Core Competencies  

Knowledge of procedures, policies, and rules governing the work of traffic laws sufficient to assist children and other pedestrians in safely crossing streets at assigned intersections.
Knowledge of performance standards as required to check on work in progress and to ensure compliance with instructions on work procedures, methods, timeframes, etc.
Ability to control the flow of traffic for the protection of pedestrians as necessary to provide staff with instructions and training in accordance with established procedures.
